Worsley Woods parkrun offers something different from the flat urban-park events: a genuine woodland trail 5k through the trees in Worsley, Salford, every Saturday at 9am. The course is undulating and run on trail and woodland paths, which means it is scenic and quieter underfoot than the tarmac courses, but also that it gets muddy after Manchester rain – trail shoes are a sensible idea in the wetter months. It is a course for enjoying the surroundings rather than chasing a fast time, and all the better for it.

Worsley sits to the west of the city, well connected by road and bus, with parking near the start. The historic Worsley village, with its canal heritage and pubs, is close by for afterwards. Facilities at the start are modest, in keeping with the trail setting, so plan your coffee around the village. parkrun is free, weekly and entirely volunteer-run, welcoming all abilities and walkers with no time limit – register once at parkrun.org.uk, save your barcode, and come prepared for trail conditions. A lovely antidote to running on roads and tarmac.
