Stalybridge Celtic

Bower Fold sits under the Pennine foothills and is one of the most scenic non-league grounds in the north. Celtic have a proud, century-old Tameside identity.

Stalybridge Celtic, founded in 1909, hold a curious place in football history: they were a founder member of the Football League Third Division North in 1921, briefly sharing a division with clubs that are now household names, before resigning and settling into the non-league football they have played ever since. That early-League pedigree still gets a mention around Bower Fold, their home in Tameside on the eastern edge of Greater Manchester.

Bower Fold is the draw. The ground sits in the foothills of the Pennines, and on a clear day the backdrop of moorland above the stands makes it one of the most photogenic non-league venues in the north of England. Celtic have spent recent decades around the upper reaches of the non-league pyramid, with a tight, loyal local following and the kind of clubhouse culture that the modern professional game has largely lost.

Stalybridge is reachable by train from Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria. For groundhoppers and anyone who likes their football with scenery, a Saturday at Bower Fold is a quietly excellent day out.
