Guide

Manchester Canoe Club are based at the Salford Watersports Centre at Salford Quays, the former Manchester docks that have become one of the most heavily used waterfront spaces in the North West. The Quays offer sheltered flatwater – the former dock basins are calm and contained, making them genuinely good for learning to paddle without the complications of river current or open water exposure. The club runs learn to paddle courses that take complete beginners from zero experience to basic kayak confidence on the water, and the Salford Watersports Centre has the boat hire and changing facilities to support it.

Beyond the beginner courses, the club sessions cover flatwater kayaking on the Quays and open water paddling further afield – the Manchester Ship Canal, local rivers, and trips to open water in the Peak District and the Lakes. British Canoeing affiliation means the club operates to nationally recognised safety and coaching standards. Salford Quays is on the Metrolink network, with the MediaCityUK and Harbour City stops serving the watersports centre. If you have always wanted to try kayaking in Manchester and assumed there was nowhere to do it, the Quays are the answer – the city sits at the head of the Ship Canal and has more water than most people realise.
