People say “Didsbury” and mean two different places. Didsbury Village clusters around School Lane and Wilmslow Road – it’s more chain-heavy, busier on a Saturday night, and the food is generally fine rather than good. West Didsbury is the other end, centred on Burton Road, and it’s where the independent places are. If someone recommends eating in Didsbury without specifying which end, ask them which end.

Hispi – School Lane, West Didsbury

Matthew Nutter’s restaurant is the best in the area and it’s not particularly close. Hispi has been consistent since it opened – French-influenced seasonal menu, good wine list, cooking that doesn’t try to be clever but executes the fundamentals well. The kind of neighbourhood restaurant that big cities have in every postcode but Manchester has in very few. Around £50-£65 per head with wine. Book well ahead – two to three weeks minimum for weekends, and even mid-week isn’t always easy. Worth the planning.

The Metropolitan – Burton Road, West Didsbury

One of the better pubs in the area for food. The Metropolitan does a proper pub menu without descending into gastro-pub clichés – good bar food, decent rotating guest ales, a wine list that won’t embarrass itself. The kind of place where you can have a pint and a decent burger without feeling like you’re in a theme park. Prices are fair. Walk-ins usually work.

Earth – Burton Road, West Didsbury

Plant-based restaurant that’s actually worth going to whether you eat meat or not. Earth doesn’t lean on the “but it tastes like meat” approach – it cooks vegetables as the main event and does it properly. Seasonal menu, small plates, natural wine. Around £35-£45 per head. Booking advisable for evenings.

Croma – School Lane, Didsbury Village

Croma is a Manchester pizza chain with a few sites across the city. The Didsbury branch is reliable – thin crust, reasonable toppings, consistent quality. It’s not going to change your life but it delivers what it promises. Good option when you need to feed a group without negotiating over cuisine. Around £14-£18 per pizza. Booking available online.

The Didsbury – Wilmslow Road, Didsbury Village

A solid pub with a Sunday roast worth making the trip for. The weekday food is decent without being exceptional, but the Sunday service is where The Didsbury earns its place in the area. Proper roasts – large portions, good gravy, Yorkshire puddings that don’t collapse. Book Sunday lunch in advance; it fills up. The roast is around £18-£22 per person.

Which End Should You Go To?

For a proper dinner out: West Didsbury, specifically Hispi. Book ahead. For something more casual after a walk or an afternoon out: either end works. For Sunday lunch: The Didsbury on Wilmslow Road is the call. For a drink before or after dinner: Burton Road in West Didsbury has the better selection of independent bars.

Didsbury is a pleasant enough place to eat in, but it’s not Ancoats. The quality ceiling is lower and the options are fewer. What it does have is convenience for south Manchester residents and a genuine standout in Hispi that justifies the trip from the city centre on its own.
