The answer before the calculator

A worked Manchester monthly budget

On a £32,000 salary, the illustrated take-home pay is £2,213.30 a month. A one-bedroom home in Manchester averaged £998.00 a month in July 2026. Band B council tax for a two-adult dwelling is £1,798.25 a year, or £149.85 when divided across twelve months.

Those two housing lines total £1,147.85 a month and leave £1,065.45 from the illustrated take-home pay. That remainder is not disposable income. Energy, water, food, transport, broadband, insurance, pension contributions and any loan repayments are not included.

The council boundary matters. Manchester, Salford, Trafford and Stockport publish different council-tax figures, and ONS reports rent for each local authority rather than for neighbourhoods. Pick the council for the address, not the place name used in an advert.
