Fallowfield vs Halls

Weighing up first year halls against moving straight into a shared house.

Manchester student housing

Most universities encourage first-year students to live in halls. The argument is reasonable - halls are social, with built-in communities and structured support. But some students prefer to move straight into private housing, either in Fallowfield or elsewhere. The trade-off is real. Halls are more expensive but include utilities, internet, and pastoral care. Private housing is cheaper but requires more independence - you're responsible for bills, repairs, council tax, and finding housemates you can actually live with.

Living in halls gives you a structured induction into university life. You meet people through the built-in communities, there are events and support services, and if something goes wrong in your accommodation, there's an office to sort it. Private housing puts you on a lease from day one - if there's a problem with the landlord or housemates, that's your problem to solve. Some people thrive with that independence from day one; others find it overwhelming alongside the academic transition.

The social advantage of halls is real but temporary - most people move out after first year, and you need to be able to make your own social connections by second year anyway. Living in private housing from first year gives you practice in that earlier, and forces you to develop independence. The decision depends on whether you value the structured entry to university life or the independence and cost savings. Neither is objectively correct - it's about what you need.
