A proper community forum for Manchester filmmakers, producers, crew and cinema enthusiasts is planned, built around the same practical questions people already ask each other in the city's production community - production advice, gear and rental house recommendations, location scouting notes, and festival strategy.

In the meantime, Manchester's film community isn't hard to find - it's mostly organised through the routes covered on our cast and crew page, through Screen Manchester's own network, and through festival events and Q&As at things like Manchester Film Festival and Grimmfest, where a lot of informal networking already happens face to face.

When the forum opens, we want it shaped by the people who'll actually use it. If there's a specific thing you wish existed - a rental house review thread, a crew-availability board, a location-scouting notes section - tell us through the contact page now, before we build it, rather than after.

We'd rather ship this properly than launch a forum that's really just an empty comments box with three posts in it. A discussion board only works once there's a critical mass of people actually using it, and getting there means having the moderation, the structure and the initial seed content sorted before the first person shows up - not after. That's the reason this is a "coming soon" page rather than a live but empty one.

In practice, Manchester's film community is already a reasonably tight-knit scene. The same honesty applies across MCR.CITY's other creative sections - the culture forum and the art forum are in exactly the same pre-launch state, for the same reason. We'd rather three community sections open properly, one after another, than have three half-built ones running at once with nobody moderating them.

Manchester's production community has always run on this kind of informal knowledge-sharing anyway - crew who've worked together for years, producers who know which rental houses are reliable, editors who trade notes on post-production houses. A forum's job isn't to invent that community, it's to give the practical knowledge already circulating inside it somewhere permanent and searchable to live, instead of scattered across group chats that make last year's advice impossible to find again.

Will production companies and rental houses be able to post, or just individuals? That's still being decided, and it's exactly the kind of question we'd like feedback on before launch rather than after.

Is there anywhere to discuss Manchester film in the meantime? Nothing MCR.CITY runs directly yet - Screen Manchester's own channels, festival events, and the wider production community are the realistic options until this launches.

Will the forum be free to use? That's the intention - a forum that charges to participate wouldn't build the kind of open community it's meant to.

Will there be separate sections for different roles - cast, crew, production? Likely, but the exact structure is one of the things we want feedback on before building it rather than deciding unilaterally.
