Guide

Manchester has one of the strongest running scenes in the country, anchored by the Great Manchester Run and the Manchester Marathon and built on a deep base of clubs. At the competitive end sit the established athletics clubs – Sale Harriers Manchester, Salford Harriers, Manchester Harriers and AC, and Stockport Harriers among them – which cater for track, cross-country and road runners chasing times and county vests.

For most people, though, the way in is a social club. Groups like Chorlton Runners and Manchester Frontrunners (the city’s LGBTQ+ inclusive club) run welcoming, multi-pace sessions where the priority is community as much as performance, and there are pub-based run crews and beginner groups meeting all over the city. Many start with a couch-to-5k programme – often run free through parkrun and local leisure centres – and progress from there.

The practical advice: pick a club near where you live, check their pace groups so you are not over- or under-matched, and just turn up to a beginner session. Running is the cheapest sport there is, Manchester’s parks and canal towpaths make good routes in every direction, and the club structure is what turns a January resolution into a year-round habit.
