Outdoor swimming in Manchester happens summer only (roughly May-September). A few proper lidos exist. Most pools are council-run and cheaper than private options.
Victoria Baths
Victoria Baths has a seasonal outdoor pool (summers). It’s a historical building with character. The outdoor pool is the same temperature as you’d expect (cold). Entry is cheap (£3-5). It fills with locals and gets busy at weekends.
Blackley Pool
Blackley has an outdoor pool open summers. It’s a council facility so entry is cheap. Water is unheated so only really swimmable June-August. It’s less “lido” and more “local council pool” which is fine if that’s what you want.
Open Water Swimming
Manchester doesn’t have natural lidos (no lakes). Closest is Hollingworth Lake near Rochdale (30 mins drive). Open water swimming events happen there in summer. It’s more serious than casual but worth knowing about if you’re into it.
Indoor Pools (Year Round)
Most swimming is indoors year-round. Manchester Aquatics Centre, various leisure centres. They’re fine but not the same as outdoor.
Timing
Go May-June for water that’s swimmable but less busy. July-August is warm but rammed. September onwards gets cold fast. Visit weekday mornings for fewer crowds.
