Fish and Chips in Manchester u2014 Where to Go

Fish and chips in Manchester have got smaller and pricier over the years. Most people grab from a van or chain now. But there are still a few places doing proper fish and chips with actual quality.

The Refuge Fish & Chips

The Refuge does fancy fish and chips (£16-20) in a proper restaurant setting. Their fish is decent quality. It’s not a chippy experience though. Plates not paper. It’s good but if you want “fish and chips” as a casual thing, this isn’t it.

Fryer’s Delight (Oldham Street)

Fryer’s Delight on Oldham Street is a proper chippy. Batter is golden, fish is flaky, portions are big. Most orders are under £8. You can eat at a stool or take away. This is actual fish and chips, not the restaurant version.

Proper Fish & Chips Van

The food courts in Altrincham Market House and Market Street have fish and chips options. Quality varies but if you go at lunch when they’re busy, you know they’re turning food over fast and fresh.

What Actually Works

Skip chain fish bars. Go to The Refuge if you want a sit-down restaurant experience. Go to Fryer’s Delight if you want actual chippy fish and chips. Go to a food court if you just want quick lunch. Vinegar and salt matter more than the venue itself – bring your own if they’re stingy.
