Things to Do in Manchester in Winter

Winter in Manchester is grey, wet, and cold. This isn't the time for long walks or outdoor exploration. Here's what actually works.

Manchester winter is real: November through February is wet, the light disappears by 4pm, and outdoor plans fail constantly. Stop pretending you’ll go for a riverside walk in January. Here’s what genuinely works.

01 Christmas

Christmas Markets

Albert Square runs a proper Christmas market from late November through December. It’s touristy but it works. The mulled wine is warming, the bratwurst is decent, and there’s usually live music. It’s Manchester in winter distilled into one place.

02 Ice

Ice Skating

If there’s an ice rink – there sometimes is in Albert Square or Spinningfields – it’s good for an afternoon. It’s cold so dress properly. Skating + hot chocolate + watching other people fall = solid winter afternoon.

03 Indoor

Indoor Museums and Galleries

John Rylands Library is warm and stunning inside. The light through the stained glass is worth the visit alone. Free entry. The Manchester Museum is free and has actual things to see. The Imperial War Museum North (Salford) is world-class for this time of year – you’re indoors, it’s relevant, and it kills an afternoon properly.

04 Festive

Festive Food and Drink

Winter is the best season for food in Manchester. Restaurants do proper winter menus. Restaurants do evening menus with heat and richness. Stocks (King Street) does seasonal dishes in winter that don’t exist in summer. Soup, roasts, pies. This is when Manchester restaurants are actually at their best.

05 Walks

Walks That Work in Winter

Castlefield in winter is actually good. The light is low and grey, which sounds bad but photographs well. The crisp cold air makes walking feel different. Go mid-morning when there’s some light, wrap up warm, then go for soup after.

06 Heated

Heated Patios

Many bars and restaurants now have heated outdoor patios. Gazebos with heaters. This is Manchester’s real winter solution. You get fresh air and heat. Albert’s Schloss has one. Foundation has one. You can actually sit outside without freezing.
