About The Lowry

The Lowry sits on the waterfront at Salford Quays in a curved steel-and-glass building that catches the light off the ship canal. Two theatres — the Lyric seats 1,730 and gets the big touring musicals, ballet and opera. The Quays Theatre is smaller, around 460 seats, and books drama, comedy and more experimental work. Between them they pull a huge range of programming through the year.

The galleries are free and hold the largest public collection of LS Lowry paintings and drawings anywhere. You know the matchstick men, but seeing the actual canvases up close is different — the industrial landscapes are bleaker and more layered than the prints suggest. Temporary exhibitions run alongside the permanent collection and are usually worth the trip on their own.

Location is the thing. Salford Quays has transformed from derelict docks to a genuine destination — MediaCityUK is next door, IWM North is across the water. The area around The Lowry has restaurants and bars, and the waterfront walk is good on a clear day. Getting there is easy — the Metrolink runs straight to MediaCityUK stop, five minutes walk.

Theatre tickets vary wildly depending on what’s on. Galleries are always free. Worth combining with IWM North for a full afternoon out.
